BRIEF

[Skin] is an interactive art installation, which can transform the touch signal on the resistance screen and transfer it to the lifting pixel screen on the top of another machine. At the same time, it can also receive the touch signal from the opposite side, so as to realize the transmission of touch signal. In addition, there is a sliding key below the resistance screen, which can be used to adjust the dwell time of touch signals. Thus, in addition to the communication through language, images, videos and other information, two people in different places can also communicate in a third dimension — touch experience. Feeling your partner’s touch and skin on the screen should be a warm experience.

PROTOTYPING & ENGINEERING

Because the device involves many components, so I have a cross reinforcement in the inner wall of the main body. I chose Arduino Mega2560 as the main control unit, and 5V micro electromagnets as the lifting units . The input signals are collected by the resistance screen on the side, and fed into the Arduino Mega, which sends the signals to another Arduino Mega through Wifi load, and then transmits the signals to the relay group, so as to control the expansion of the electromagnet and complete the display of the three-dimensional pattern. Potentiometers are used to control the residence time of touch signals. Because the electromagnet and Arduino both have high calorific value, I made some hollow design for heat dissipation, and installed two heat dissipation fans inside.

PROCESSING

The main structure is completed by 3D printing. Due to the large number of electromagnets and relays, the greatest workload lies in the hinged and welded lines. PCB design will be redesigned for subsequent iteration versions, and solder paste with reflow welding will be adopted to save workload.

Skin(Tactile-Trans Installation)

[Skin] is an interactive art installation that conveys emotion through touch. For communication between two machines through Wifi, you only need to swipe with your finger on the transparent resistance screen on the side, and the touch track will appear three-dimensional on the other machine. The speed can be controlled by sliding button of potentiometer under the resistance screen in the whole process.

[Skin] is composed of the following parts: 3D printing main structure, 3D printing tactile key cap, relay group, micro electromagnet, Arduino Mega2560, Wifi module, four-wire resistance screen, potentiometer, 12V to 5V transformer, Type-C base, aviation socket, toggle switch.
